So many Christians back the beliefs with Bible, but how do we know that’s actually the word of God? Couldn’t some random persons just have written it and called it the word of God?
Well, that could be a claim but I think one thing we need to foremost keep in mind, is that the bible wasn’t just written by one person. The Bible was written by over 40 different authors.
The Bible was written in 3 different languages. We’ve got Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek.
The Bible was written on 3 different continents: Africa, Europe, and Asia. So that makes really Bible unique.
Jesus also said that the Bible is the word of God. In Mark’s gospel, Jesus claimed that the scriptures are the word of God. He also said that God’s word is truth.
In fact, the apostles also claimed that the Bible is “God’s word breathed out”. And in 1st Peter chapter 1 verse 20-21, Peter says that the origin of the Bible is God.
Moreover, there are things we can think about.
First, we can think about predictive prophesy. Did you know that the Bible is filled with prophecies about future events? In fact, one great example of that is Isaiah 45. There we have a king by the name of Cyrus. Did you know that the Bible named Cyrus by name 100 years before he was even born? In fact, it goes to describe what Cyrus would do. He would permit the Jews after the Babylon exile to go back to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple. That happened 150 years after the book of Isaiah said it would happen.
So, you’ve got predictive prophecy and God said through that, you could know that God is giving to us is word in scripture.
Second, there is archaeological evidence. Did you know that the people in places mentioned in the Bible are historical? In the early1990s for example, the Tel Dan stele was discovered. For centuries, these scholars would ridicule that King David that the only evidence for David’s existence was only found in the Bible. But when the Tel Dan stele was discovered, they found King David’s name inscribed there and it is dated back to the time of David.
So, we also have archaeology confirming the historical reliability of the Bible.
Finally, there is also manuscript reliability. You know when we talk about how the Bible came to earth, there were copies upon copies by scribes who meticulously and accurately copied the Bible for us. This was confirmed by the Dead Sea Scrolls found in Qumran Caves in Israel in the 1940s and 50s. It’s also confirmed by the 5000+ ancient manuscripts that have been discovered and are all catalogued today affirming that the Bible we have today is reliable.
